Top court examines claims of forged guarantees, fund siphoning and prolonged hardship for homebuyers.
SC Seeks Replies from Haryana Government, Mahira Buildwell over Alleged EWS Housing Fraud.
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Haryana government and real estate developer Mahira Buildwell (formerly Czar Buildwell) regarding allegations of cheating homebuyers in an Economically Weaker Section (EWS) housing project under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in Gurugram. An association of homebuyers has accused the developer of obtaining its licence through fraudulent means, including forged bank guarantees and fabricated signatures. According to the petitioners, despite collecting substantial funds from allottees, the developer has completed only 5–7% of the construction, allegedly siphoning off money and failing to meet stipulated construction deadlines. The court noted broader concerns about builder–bank collusion in similar cases and recalled its earlier directive for a CBI investigation into subvention scheme frauds, which led to multiple FIRs. The bench also sought responses from Haryana RERA, the Enforcement Directorate, Axis Bank, and Canara Bank, citing alleged regulatory lapses that have caused significant financial and psychological distress to homebuyers.
