As home prices soar in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, middle-class buyers are finding it increasingly difficult to afford property.

A Reddit post sparked debate after one user considered living on a houseboat due to rising housing costs. While the idea caught attention, most netizens suggested more practical options, such as purchasing land in villages or moving to the outskirts of Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. In areas like rural Gujarat, homes can cost as little as ₹10–12 lakh. Meanwhile, NoBroker data shows a sharp decline in Bengaluru's mid-segment housing launches, with just 22% of 2024’s new units priced between ₹40–80 lakh. In contrast, the luxury segment—homes above ₹1.5 crore—has grown to 34% of new launches, highlighting the widening affordability gap. With EMIs out of reach for many, the shift towards rural or peri-urban living is emerging as a realistic alternative for aspiring homeowners in India's urban affordability crisis.
