Gujarat has overtaken Rajasthan to become India’s top renewable energy state, with a total installed capacity of 35,900 MW by May 2025, slightly ahead of Rajasthan’s 35,400 MW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
While Rajasthan continues to lead in solar power capacity, its lag in attracting wind energy projects and weak performance in the rooftop solar segment cost it the top spot. Gujarat’s success stems from its robust wind energy development and proactive rooftop solar adoption. In contrast, Rajasthan’s promised state rooftop subsidy of ₹17,000 remains stalled in the finance department, hindering its goal of covering five lakh households. Experts criticize Rajasthan’s lack of wind energy strategy, noting that combining solar with wind provides more efficient energy solutions. Despite Rajasthan’s solar dominance, Gujarat’s diversified renewable portfolio has given it a competitive edge, reflecting the importance of balanced energy planning and execution in achieving leadership.
