The Centre has appointed NEERI to scrutinize the environmental impact of the Rs 76,220 crore Vadhvan Port project in Maharashtra, following a Supreme Court directive amid legal challenges by environmental groups.
NEERI will assess existing studies and reports, including those from NCSCM and NCCR, and determine if monitoring mechanisms by MoEF&CC and DTEPA are adequate. The port, to be built offshore and beyond Dahanu Taluka’s fragile ecological zone, received green clearance after DTEPA's NOC and extensive scientific evaluation. However, land acquisition is still underway and subject to Supreme Court orders. NEERI’s report, due in 30 days, will guide further legal proceedings, with project proponents affirming compliance and readiness to address any new recommendations.
