India’s Clean Energy Surge: Solar to Quadruple, Wind to Triple by 2035.

Massive renewable expansion set to cut coal’s share in power generation below 50%

India is set for a dramatic transformation of its power sector over the next decade, with solar capacity expected to quadruple and wind energy capacity projected to triple, according to the Central Electricity Authority. The projections are part of the National Generation Adequacy Plan released by an adviser to the Ministry of Power. The expansion of renewable energy is expected to reduce coal’s dominance in electricity generation to 49% by 2035–36, down from over 70% today. Total non-fossil fuel capacity is estimated to reach 786 GW by 2035–36, with solar power accounting for nearly 65% of the clean energy mix. Alongside renewables, nuclear power capacity is expected to triple to 22 GW, while large hydro capacity may rise 50% to 77 GW. Pumped storage hydro is projected to grow 13-fold to 94 GW, and battery storage capacity is set to jump sharply to 80 GW, strengthening grid stability and energy security.
