Infrastructure projects face ₹2.88 lakh crore cumulative cost overrun: MoSPI.

Revised costs of 1,731 central projects rise to ₹33.60 lakh crore, with transport and logistics accounting for the largest share.

Central infrastructure projects worth more than ₹150 crore recorded a cumulative cost overrun of around ₹2.88 lakh crore, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s (MoSPI) August 2026 report. The government monitored 1,731 ongoing projects across 17 ministries and departments, with their revised cost rising to ₹33.60 lakh crore from the original estimate of ₹30.72 lakh crore. Cumulative expenditure has reached ₹16.33 lakh crore, or 48.59% of the revised project cost. About 647 projects have achieved more than 80% physical progress, while 312 have crossed 80% financial completion. Transport & Logistics dominates the portfolio with 1,191 projects and a revised cost of ₹16.05 lakh crore, representing 48% of the total. The energy sector follows with ₹10.95 lakh crore across 223 projects. Roads and highways account for the largest number of projects, with 982 projects under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
