Western Carriers Wins 15-Year Contract to Operate Kolkata Port Cargo Terminal

₹13.68 crore investment planned to expand cargo capacity, improve efficiency and strengthen multimodal connectivity.

Western Carriers (India) Ltd has secured a 15-year contract to develop and operate a General Cargo Terminal (GCT) at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) under the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority. The terminal is already operational and will handle containers and other cargo. Western Carriers will now begin development work aimed at increasing cargo-handling capacity, improving operational efficiency and expanding its service offerings. The company expects to invest around ₹13.68 crore in infrastructure development, subject to revision as the project progresses. The terminal strengthens Western Carriers’ presence in eastern India’s logistics infrastructure and benefits from Kolkata Dock System’s road, rail and inland waterway connectivity. Its links with the Eastern Railway network will further support regional cargo movement. The project aligns with key government logistics initiatives, including the National Logistics Policy, PM Gati Shakti, Sagarmala, Bharatmala and Dedicated Freight Corridors, supporting India’s broader push toward efficient multimodal logistics infrastructure.
