From July 1, 2025, the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) comes into global force, mandating green recycling of end-of-life vessels
India, home to the world’s largest shipbreaking yard in Alang, is well-prepared, with 112 of 131 yards already HKC-compliant. Alang has upgraded safety and environmental infrastructure, positioning itself as a global leader in green ship recycling. The HKC requires authorised recycling yards, detailed hazardous materials inventories (IHM), and strict certification. Global stakeholders like Maersk, which has recycled 17 ships in Alang, view the move as key to sustainable shipping. While challenges like financing and market volatility persist, the sector supports over 200,000 livelihoods and plays a vital role in the circular economy. Experts urge recognition of ship recycling as a climate solution capable of decarbonising steel and reviving coastal economies. The convention marks a turning point in global maritime sustainability.
