Government data shows minor ports handled 753 million tonnes of cargo, with Gujarat retaining dominance despite a slight decline.

Growth at India’s Non-Major Ports Slows in FY26 Despite Rise in Cargo Volumes.

India’s non-major ports recorded slower cargo growth in FY26, handling a combined 753.07 million tonnes (MT), up just 1.44% from the previous year, according to government data. Overseas cargo accounted for 81.27% of total traffic at 612.02 MT, while coastal cargo stood at 141.05 MT. In comparison, the country’s 12 major ports handled 914.73 MT, registering a stronger 7% annual growth. Gujarat remained the leading maritime state, with ports under the Gujarat Maritime Board handling 485.25 MT, though volumes dipped slightly by 0.5% year-on-year. Andhra Pradesh followed with 116.77 MT, while Maharashtra and Odisha also posted significant cargo volumes. Coal remained the dominant commodity handled, contributing 26.93% of total cargo, while POL and crude products showed strong 13.47% growth. Fertiliser cargo registered the highest growth at 51.9% during FY26.
