India Ranks 3rd in Dry Cargo Shipbuilding for European Short Sea Trade.
India has emerged as the third-largest builder of general dry cargo vessels for the European short sea trade, according to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This milestone reflects the impact of Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and the government’s maritime reforms. The Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 has driven over 150 initiatives focused on infrastructure, shipbuilding, logistics, and global engagement. From FY22 to FY24, major ports’ capacity rose from 1,598 to 1,630 MMTPA, vessel turnaround time dropped from 53 to 48 hours, and berth day output increased to 18,900 MT. Capital expenditure jumped 37% to ₹7,571 crore, while Gross Budget Support rose 54% to ₹1,687 crore. Over 75 port development projects were awarded during this period. Sonowal highlighted these achievements as proof of India’s growing global stature in shipbuilding and the success of the "Make in India, Make for the World" campaign.
