The RV University Library has been envisioned as a contemporary learning environment where design, atmosphere, and functionality come together with quiet clarity. Organised as three interconnected wings anchored by a large central atrium, the building places openness and natural light at its core. The atrium becomes the defining feature of the library — filled with daylight, visually calm, and designed to create the sense of comfort essential for focused study and intellectual engagement.
Siting and Spatial Strategy
The library is located in a previously underutilised corner of the campus, where strict setback rules and surrounding buildings created design constraints. These limitations became an opportunity to develop a thoughtful spatial strategy. The final three-winged form evolved from the study of campus movement patterns, connecting a planned plaza to a main pedestrian corridor linking the canteen, upcoming gymnasium, and the central quad.
This corridor, referred to as the “Knowledge Street,” integrates the library into the everyday life of the campus. The building footprint was carefully planned to preserve a cluster of mature tamarind trees, creating a shaded outdoor space for students and softening the architectural mass. A cantilevered volume extends toward the university plaza, forming a strong visual identity and marking the library as an important academic landmark.
Harnessing Natural Light
Natural light plays a central role in the design philosophy. The building is oriented to maximise daylight and reduce dependence on artificial lighting. Large openings and carefully designed shading allow the interiors to remain bright yet comfortable throughout the day.
In the evening, a warm and carefully controlled lighting scheme transforms the interiors into a calm and focused study environment, suitable for long hours of reading and research.
A Dialogue with Nature
Windows are positioned to frame views of trees, sky, and campus landscape, creating a constant visual connection with nature. This interaction introduces a sense of calm and wellbeing, reinforcing the library’s role as a peaceful academic retreat.
A Composed and Neutral Interior Palette
The interior design follows a restrained and balanced aesthetic. Neutral colours, natural textures, and warm tones create a calm background, while subtle colour accents add visual interest. This approach ensures the environment remains welcoming without distracting users from their work.

The library supports different styles of learning by offering a variety of seating options. Individual study pods provide privacy and concentration, while open tables and collaborative zones allow discussion and group work.
