A New Era of High-Speed Travel Begins with the Surat–Vapi Launch.
India’s First Bullet Train to Cover 100 km on Inaugural Run in 2027, Says Railway Minister.
India’s first bullet train will make its debut run over a 100 km stretch between Surat and Vapi in August 2027, doubling the originally planned 50 km route, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The decision comes as significant progress is made on the 508-km Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, designed for speeds of 320 kmph. Once fully operational, the train will cover the two cities in just 1 hour 58 minutes with four stops, or 2 hours 17 minutes with all 12 station halts.
Initially launched in 2017 with a target completion year of 2023, the project faced delays due to land acquisition challenges. The entire corridor is now expected to be operational by the end of 2029. Uncertainty remains about the rolling stock for the inaugural run, as the current signalling system may not support Japanese Shinkansen trains. BEML has been tasked with developing a 250 kmph high-speed train for early operations.
