Gujarat Cuts Green Power Banking Charge by 33%.

Lower banking fees to make renewable energy more affordable for industries.

The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has reduced the banking charge for green energy open-access consumers by 33%, from ₹1.50 to ₹1 per unit. The revised charge will apply from September 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, under the sixth amendment to the Gujarat Green Energy Open Access Regulations. The move will reduce the cost of storing surplus renewable power for later use. Consumers will save 50 paise on every unit of renewable energy banked. For an industrial consumer banking 1 crore units, the potential saving could reach ₹50 lakh, depending on actual utilisation. The reduction is expected to benefit industries with fluctuating electricity demand or variable solar and wind generation, particularly those unable to establish captive renewable energy projects due to limited space, location or investment capacity. Industry experts said lower banking charges could make open-access renewable power more competitive, especially as industries face rising electricity costs. The measure is also expected to encourage greater adoption of renewable energy and support Gujarat’s clean-energy transition.
