Cochin Shipyard Plans ₹2,000 Crore Shipbuilding Facility at VOC Port, Thoothukudi.
Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is set to invest around ₹2,000 crore in a new shipbuilding and ship repair facility at VOC Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The Mumbai-listed company emerged as the highest bidder in a tender floated by the VOC Port Authority to lease 49 hectares of land and 7 hectares of waterfront for a period of 30 years. The proposed facility is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The project will focus on constructing new vessels as well as providing repair and maintenance services for commercial and naval ships. It is also expected to generate employment opportunities and boost industrial activity in the region. The investment aligns with the Government of India’s vision of expanding the country’s shipbuilding ecosystem and positioning India as a global maritime hub. The project is subject to the completion of lease formalities and necessary regulatory approvals.
