“Expanding roads, empowering villages—India’s rural network gets bolder.”
States Seek Wider Reach as PMGSY-IV Targets Nearly 50,000 Rural Habitations
States have proposed an ambitious list of 49,449 rural habitations to be connected under the fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV), nearly double the original target of 25,000. The revised list, submitted after surveys conducted through the Gram Sadak Survey App, will undergo further scrutiny by the Union Rural Development Ministry. With such a large demand, the government may either extend PMGSY-IV with a bigger outlay or introduce a new phase post-2028-29 to cover all eligible habitations. Odisha has identified the highest number of unconnected habitations (6,118), followed by Madhya Pradesh (5,863), Assam (5,117), Andhra Pradesh (4,132), and Gujarat (3,873). PMGSY-IV, launched in 2024 with a ₹70,125-crore package, aims to build 62,500 km of rural roads over five years. The scheme continues to play a critical role in boosting connectivity, supporting local economies, and reducing rural poverty.
