Global Shipbuilding Power Meets Tamil Nadu’s Rising Maritime Vision
HD Hyundai to Build Mega Shipyard in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi.
South Korea’s HD Hyundai has announced plans to establish its first Indian shipyard in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, marking a major milestone for India’s maritime infrastructure. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior executives from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE). Tamil Nadu won the project over states like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh due to its strong policy framework, thriving engineering ecosystem, and strategic coastal advantages. HD Hyundai officials highlighted Thoothukudi’s ideal climate, skilled workforce, and world-class port potential. The shipyard will support mega vessel manufacturing and strengthen India’s global maritime footprint. With this investment, Tamil Nadu further solidifies its position as a leading hub for heavy engineering, port-led development, and long-term industrial growth.
