Indian Railways achieved record freight loading and revenue in FY25, marking its fourth consecutive year of growth.

Total freight loading crossed 1.61 billion tonnes, making India the second-largest railway freight carrier globally, surpassing the US. Total revenue reached ₹2.62 lakh crore, with capital expenditure exceeding ₹22.65 lakh crore. Passenger earnings rose to ₹1.77 lakh crore but fell short of the ₹2.8 lakh crore target, despite record footfall, partly due to the Kumbh Mela. Coal transport remained dominant at 817 million tonnes, improving coal availability at thermal power plants, with closing stock rising to 57 million tonnes. Officials emphasized the need to maintain affordability and reliability in mass transit while sustaining growth.
