The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has floated a global tender to build six cellular container ships with a capacity of 8,000 TEU each, in a project valued at approximately $720 million. The tender includes two firm orders and four optional vessels, aimed at strengthening India's container shipping fleet and reducing reliance on foreign carriers. Under the tender terms, Indian shipyards will receive the Right of First Refusal (RoFR), allowing them to match the lowest bid submitted by a foreign shipyard and secure the contract. The initiative is expected to boost domestic shipbuilding capabilities while promoting the government's vision of developing India into a global maritime hub.
