Korean giant eyes Gujarat; India targets top 5 global shipbuilder rank.

HD Korea Shipbuilding Explores New Greenfield Shipyard in Kandla as India Pushes Maritime Vision 2047.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the world’s largest shipbuilder, is in talks with the Indian government to set up a greenfield shipyard at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. A Korean delegation met senior officials in Delhi and will visit the proposed 6,000-acre site at Veera to assess feasibility. The discussions align with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to place India among the world’s top five shipbuilders under new policy frameworks like SBFAS, MDF and SbDS. The move follows Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s recent visit to South Korea, where he urged Korean shipbuilders to tap India’s booming “sunrise sector.” With Indian energy PSUs spending $5–8 billion annually on freight and requiring dozens of vessels, the government has offered order guarantees to HD KSOE. Strong collaborations, including an MoU with Cochin Shipyard, further strengthen India’s bid to emerge as a global shipbuilding hub.
