LNG-powered vessel order seen as boost to India’s maritime ambitions.
CMA CGM–CSL Deal a Landmark for Shipbuilding Sector: MoS Shantanu Thakur.
Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur has termed the contract between global shipping major CMA CGM Group and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) as “one of the most important developments in the shipbuilding sector.” Speaking to reporters, Thakur said the agreement aligns with India’s long-term maritime goals under the leadership of Narendra Modi, as the country aims to rank among the top five global players by 2047. He highlighted strong regional opportunities, particularly in Southeast Asia, noting that Indian shipyards can supply vessels to maritime nations across the region. The deal involves the construction of six 1,700 TEU LNG-fuelled feeder container vessels at CSL’s yard in Kochi, to be registered under the Indian flag. Thakur said the agreement traces its roots to the Prime Minister’s February 12, 2025, visit to France, during which CMA CGM’s leadership expressed interest in building and flagging ships in India—an intent now realised through this contract.
