Move to reduce post-activation hassles while tightening bank-level verification.
NHAI Scraps KYV Requirement for New Car FASTags from February 1, 2026.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) requirement for new FASTag issuances in the car, jeep and van categories will be discontinued from February 1, 2026. The decision aims to ease the inconvenience faced by highway users who often experience delays and follow-up checks even after submitting valid vehicle documents. Under the new framework, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement for existing or new car FASTags. It will be carried out only in complaint-based cases such as incorrect issuance, misuse or issues like loose FASTags. In the absence of complaints, no KYV checks will be mandated. At the same time, NHAI has tightened pre-activation norms for issuer banks. FASTags will now be activated only after mandatory verification of vehicle details through the VAHAN database or the registration certificate. The revised process shifts full verification responsibility to banks, simplifying procedures for users while maintaining system compliance.
