National Shipbuilding Mission backs brownfield projects to strengthen India’s global shipbuilding ambitions.

Cochin Shipyard, Swan Defence Get Green Signal for Expansion.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Swan Defence & Heavy Industries have received in-principle approval from the National Shipbuilding Mission for brownfield expansion of their shipyard facilities in Kochi and Pipavav. Cochin Shipyard plans to establish a ₹4,000 crore block fabrication facility through a joint venture with South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, while Swan Defence will expand operations on 75 acres adjoining its Pipavav yard. The approvals are part of the government’s Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS), which provides capital assistance of up to 25% of approved project costs, capped at ₹1,500 crore per shipyard. Funding will be released in milestone-based phases to encourage capacity expansion, automation, and modern infrastructure. The initiative supports India’s long-term vision of becoming one of the world’s top five shipbuilding nations by 2047 through significant investments in shipyard modernisation, increased production capacity, and stronger global competitiveness in the maritime sector.
