Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹8,686 crore Vizhinjam transhipment port in Kerala, marking a major shift in India's maritime strategy by reducing dependence on foreign ports like Colombo.

Developed by Adani Ports, Vizhinjam handled over 6 lakh TEUs since starting operations in December 2023 and aims to scale up capacity to 5 million TEUs by 2028. Backed by MSC and strategically located, the port is poised to become a key global transhipment hub. Realising this potential could reduce India’s EXIM logistics costs by 30%, improve shipping efficiency, and boost competitiveness. Experts call it a game-changer for Indian trade, aligning with the “Make in India” vision while enhancing supply chain resilience in a shifting global maritime landscape.
