Scrap Becomes a Crucial Driver in India’s Green Steel Transition.
Steel scrap is emerging as a key input in India’s decarbonisation journey, highlighted at the 12th Indian Steel Markets Conference hosted by mjunction in Mumbai. India consumes nearly 42 million tonnes of scrap annually, with demand rising over 6% each year, said Vinaya Varma, MD of mjunction. The country imports around 9 million tonnes due to domestic shortages, even as steel demand continues to grow. Industry leaders emphasised that sustainability is now a strategic priority for major steel producers like SAIL and Tata Steel. However, sourcing scrap remains challenging due to rising steel consumption, reliance on costly imported coking coal, and increasing iron ore prices. mjunction, active in organised scrap trading for over two decades, has developed an AI-driven digital platform to streamline procurement, onboard 250+ suppliers, and ensure compliance. It has delivered 1.2 million tonnes of scrap in three years, supporting integrated steel plants across 15 states.
