WTWFI to Mobilise Contract and Private Terminal Workers at Ports.

Water Transport Workers' Federation of India (WTWFI) has announced plans to mobilise contract, container, and private terminal workers to strengthen the trade union movement across India’s port sector. The decision was taken at the Working Committee meeting held on May 16–17 at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Navi Mumbai. Affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), WTWFI resolved to prepare a separate charter of demands for the upcoming wage revision covering both regular and non-regular workers, effective January 1, 2027. The meeting reviewed challenges faced by workers in major and non-major ports, including manpower planning, privatisation, and labour rights. As part of its nationwide mobilisation, WTWFI will observe “Ports Day” on June 19, 2026, at all major ports. The federation also urged the government to ensure consultations with trade unions before implementing policy changes, halt diversion of port surplus funds, and immediately implement pending wage settlements and worker welfare measures.
