18,000-tonne facility to supply cleaner marine fuel and cut shipping emissions.
Thermax, Ankur Scientific Partner to Set Up India’s First Green Methanol Plant at Deendayal Port.
Thermax Limited has partnered with Ankur Scientific to establish India’s first green methanol production facility at the Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat. The project marks a major step toward decarbonising the maritime sector, where demand for cleaner fuels is rising rapidly. The proposed plant will have an annual production capacity of up to 18,000 tonnes of green methanol, nearly half of India’s estimated methanol requirement of 37,000 tonnes for shipping by 2030. Designed as a modular, integrated unit spread across about one acre within the port premises, the facility will produce around five tonnes of green methanol per day. The methanol will meet international ASTM standards with over 99.9% purity and comply with EU certification norms for green bio-methanol. Produced using Ankur Scientific’s gasification technology and Ganda Baval biomass, the fuel will support reduced fossil fuel dependence in marine transport. The initiative aligns with the government’s push for sustainable solutions in hard-to-abate sectors like shipping.
