India and Bhutan Review Cooperation on Trans-Border Rivers and Hydropower Projects.

India and Bhutan have reviewed their ongoing cooperation in the water resources sector, focusing on trans-border river management, flood forecasting, flood management, hydrological data sharing, and hydropower development. The discussions took place during a high-level bilateral meeting between Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil and Bhutan’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering in New Delhi. Both sides assessed the progress of the Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, which is being developed in Bhutan with support from the Government of India, and explored measures to accelerate its completion. The delegations also discussed upgrading Bhutan’s hydro-meteorological network and expanding the existing framework for sharing hydrological data on trans-border rivers. Reaffirming their commitment to sustainable and mutually beneficial water resource management, India and Bhutan agreed to strengthen technical collaboration, institutional engagement, and mutual trust. The meeting highlighted the importance of deeper bilateral cooperation for regional water security, disaster resilience, and clean energy development.
