India Adds Record 55.29 GW Non-Fossil Power Capacity in FY26, Ranks Third Globally.

India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil power generation capacity in FY26, taking the country’s total non-fossil installed capacity to 283.46 GW, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said. The milestone has propelled India to the third position globally in renewable energy installed capacity, surpassing Brazil, according to Renewable Energy Statistics 2026. Joshi highlighted that in July 2025, renewables met a record 51.5% of India’s electricity demand, marking the highest-ever share. As of March 31, 2026, non-fossil sources accounted for 29.2% of total power generation during FY26. India also achieved 50% of cumulative installed power capacity from non-fossil sources in June 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 NDC target under the Paris Agreement. The government is now working towards achieving 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, in line with commitments announced at COP26.
