“Clean Energy, Global Unity—Powering Resilience for Island Nations.”
India Urges Global Cooperation to Strengthen Energy Security for Small Island Nations at CoP30
Speaking at the High-Level Ministerial Leadership Session of the ISA SIDS Platform during UNFCCC CoP30 in Belém, Brazil, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called for unified global action to enhance energy security for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He highlighted India’s achievement of surpassing 500 GW of installed electricity capacity, with over half coming from clean energy—meeting its 50% non-fossil target five years early. India is now the world’s fourth-largest renewable energy producer and the third-largest solar power generator. Yadav showcased India’s solar success through schemes like PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar, agricultural solar pumps, solarised feeders, and rural electrification under PM JANMAN, noting that over 20 lakh households have adopted rooftop solar. He also referenced India's upcoming large-scale solar-plus-battery project in Ladakh. Emphasising the role of the International Solar Alliance’s SIDS Platform, Yadav said India’s models can help island nations reduce diesel reliance and strengthen climate resilience.
