From Imports to Independence: Powering India’s Solar Self-Reliance.

India to Mandate Use of Locally Made Solar Ingots & Wafers from June 2028.

India is set to mandate the use of domestically manufactured solar ingots and wafers for clean energy projects starting June 2028, marking a decisive step to reduce reliance on Chinese imports and strengthen the local solar supply chain. The proposal, announced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, aims to ensure domestic sourcing across the entire solar manufacturing value chain. Currently, India has an installed capacity of nearly 2 GW for ingots and wafers, but major players such as Waaree Energies, Tata Power, and Indosol Solar are planning multi-billion-rupee investments to expand local manufacturing. The government has already mandated locally assembled solar modules for public projects and will require domestically made solar cells from June 2026. With this move, India aims to support its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, while boosting self-reliance and supply chain security in renewable energy.
