Housing and clean energy converge to cut power bills for PVTG households.
Chhattisgarh Launches Solar-Powered PMAY Homes for Tribal Families in First-of-Its-Kind Model
Chhattisgarh has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative by installing rooftop solar systems on PM Janman Awas (PMAY) homes of Pahadi Korwa families, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), ensuring both permanent housing and near-zero electricity bills. In the pilot phase, eight homes in Gudurumuda village of Korba district’s Podi-Uproda block have been equipped with 1 kW rooftop solar plants under the PM Suryaghar scheme. The project uniquely converges PM Awas, Janman Mission and District Mineral Foundation (DMF) funds to deliver assured solar power to remote and economically fragile households. Each system costs about ₹60,000, of which most is covered through central and state subsidies, while the balance is funded via DMF. Officials said the model creates a permanent pathway to clean, affordable electricity for marginalised families who struggle with unreliable supply and monthly bills. Encouraged by the pilot’s success, the state plans to extend the model to more PVTG villages across other districts, linking welfare housing with sustainable energy access.
