Green Hydrogen May Replace LPG for Cooking Amid West Asia Crisis: Top Scientist.

India is exploring green hydrogen as a future alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for household cooking to cut import dependence amid supply disruptions caused by the West Asia crisis, according to Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. He said solar-powered electrolysers and hydrogen-based burners could eventually deliver a cooking experience similar to LPG, with a clean flame generated using an electric spark. The concept is currently in the research and development stage, though a few Indian startups have demonstrated hydrogen-based cooking solutions using on-site electrolysers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The process is zero-emission, producing only water vapour, and can run for up to six hours using about 100 ml of water and 1 kWh of electricity. State-owned NTPC is also advancing trials, with its R&D arm NETRA successfully demonstrating hydrogen cooking using fuel supplied from its Greater Noida facility. The move aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore to strengthen India’s energy security and self-reliance.
