India's Renewable Energy Capacity Crosses 300 GW, Saves $100 Billion in Fuel Imports: IEA..

Renewable expansion has strengthened India's energy security, with capacity projected to reach 530 GW by 2030, driven largely by solar power.   India's renewable energy capacity has crossed 300 GW in 2026, helping the country save more than $100 billion in coal and natural gas import costs between 2011 and 2025, according to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026. Launched at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit, the report noted that India achieved its target of 50% non-fossil fuel-based installed power capacity in 2025, five years ahead of schedule. Renewable capacity has nearly quadrupled over the past decade, making India the world's second-fastest-growing renewables market. The IEA projects capacity to reach about 530 GW by 2030, with solar PV accounting for over 80% of additions. However, inadequate grid infrastructure, limited energy storage, financial challenges faced by distribution utilities and project delays remain key concerns. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasised strengthening domestic manufacturing, mobilising investment and expanding transmission infrastructure to sustain future growth.
