“India’s Green Hydrogen: Powering the World, Leading the Future.”
India Rises as a Global Green Hydrogen Powerhouse, Says Hydrogen Europe Chief.
India is rapidly emerging as one of the strongest global players in green hydrogen, driven by robust domestic demand, strategic export potential, and consistent policy support. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, highlighted that India’s ideal geographic location—along major East Asia–Europe shipping routes—positions it perfectly to export green methanol and green ammonia to key markets, especially the European Union. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India targets 5 million tonnes of production by FY30. This aligns closely with the EU’s REPowerEU plan to import 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030. Chatzimarkakis noted that India’s production schemes largely comply with EU norms, strengthening export confidence. With upcoming tenders on green hydrogen derivatives and falling prices in green ammonia bids, India is set to accelerate global adoption. He added that Europe could learn from India’s policy consistency, speed, and pragmatic approach.
