Move aims to accommodate Terminal 1 redevelopment and shift around five million annual passengers to the new airport.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has proposed shifting flights to 14 international destinations from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport to facilitate the redevelopment of Terminal 1. In a letter to the Civil Aviation Ministry, MIAL sought voluntary surrender of airline slots by November 3, proposing the temporary relocation of services. The airport operator aims to shift around five million passengers annually, representing nearly 9% of the existing airport's traffic capacity. The proposed destinations include Bahrain, Dammam, Dhaka, Doha, Jakarta, Jeddah, Kathmandu, Kuwait City, Madinah, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. MIAL has requested the ministry's intervention if airlines do not voluntarily offer slots. The move is intended to consolidate flights to these destinations at one airport within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while freeing up capacity for Terminal 1's demolition and reconstruction. However, the proposal raises concerns over airline slot rights and passenger convenience.
