India Adds Record 6.05 GW Wind Capacity in FY26, Growth Jumps 46% YoY.

India has added a record 6.05 GW of wind energy capacity in FY 2025–26, marking the highest-ever annual addition and a 46% year-on-year increase, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This surpasses the previous peak of over 5.5 GW achieved in FY 2016–17 and takes the country’s cumulative installed wind capacity beyond 56 GW. The ministry attributed the surge to targeted policy measures, improved transmission readiness, competitive tariff discovery, and a robust project pipeline. Key initiatives include concessional customs duties on turbine components, graded waivers of inter-state transmission charges until June 2028, competitive bidding, a dedicated wind renewable consumption obligation framework, and technical support from the National Institute of Wind Energy. States such as Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra led additions, aided by wind-solar hybrid projects and green energy open access. The milestone strengthens India’s path toward its 2030 target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity.
