Renewable Energy Push to Cut Costs, Reduce Emissions & Power a Greener Metro Network

Kolkata Metro Commissions 500 kWp Solar Plant at Jessore Road Station.

Metro Railway has commissioned a 500 kWp rooftop solar power plant at Jessore Road Metro Station on Kolkata's Yellow Line, reinforcing its commitment to clean and sustainable energy. Inaugurated by General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta, the solar facility is expected to generate nearly 1,800 units of electricity daily, meeting the station's auxiliary power needs such as lighting, lifts, and escalators while supplying surplus power to the grid. The project is estimated to save around ₹25 lakh annually in electricity costs, recover its investment within three years, and operate efficiently for 25 years with cloud-based performance monitoring. Metro Railway is also expanding its renewable energy footprint with 6.5 MWp of additional solar projects already awarded, a 13 MWp project under finalisation, and another 10 MWp planned by 2027. Once completed, the network's total solar capacity will reach 34.3 MWp, significantly reducing electricity costs and carbon emissions.
