Renewables Reach 20% Share of India’s Power Generation in July.

Renewable generation rises over 30% year-on-year, signalling faster growth in India’s clean-energy transition.

Renewable energy sources accounted for nearly 20% of India’s total power generation in July 2026, reflecting the country’s accelerating shift towards cleaner energy. According to Grid India data, total power generation stood at 1,81,790 MW, of which 36,355 MW came from solar, wind and biomass. Renewables’ share increased to 19.9%, compared with 16.9% in July 2025, when renewable sources generated 27,835 MW out of 1,64,393 MW. This represents year-on-year growth of more than 30% in renewable generation. Despite the rise of clean energy, thermal sources such as coal and lignite continued to dominate India’s electricity mix, contributing around 66% of total generation and remaining crucial for baseload power. India’s renewable energy capacity now accounts for over 42% of total installed capacity, while non-fossil capacity, including hydro and nuclear, has reached around 295 GW. Peak power demand also crossed 270 GW in July, highlighting the country’s growing energy requirements.
