‘Run for Sun’ Marathon celebrates India’s rapid rise as a global clean energy leader.
India Installs Record 2.7 Lakh Rooftop Solar Systems in April.
India marked a major milestone in its clean energy journey by installing a record 2.7 lakh rooftop solar systems in April 2026, the highest ever in a single month. To commemorate this achievement and International Sun Day, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy organised the ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon in New Delhi, celebrating the power of “Saur Shakti” in nation-building. The milestone was achieved under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which has enabled 30 lakh rooftop installations benefiting over 45 lakh households. India’s cumulative solar capacity has now reached 150 GW, a massive jump from 2.82 GW in 2014, with the last 50 GW added in just 15 months. Speaking at the event, Santosh Kumar Sarangi said the marathon symbolised India’s collective commitment to a sustainable, self-reliant future. With nearly 50 per cent of installed power capacity now from non-fossil sources, India has achieved its 2030 clean energy target well ahead of schedule, strengthening its global leadership in renewable energy.
