Saving Energy, Saving Lives — Karnataka Leads the Solar Shift.

From Grid to Green: Solar-Powered Health Centres Transform Karnataka’s Healthcare.

Karnataka’s Saura Swasthya scheme is revolutionising public healthcare by installing solar panels across nearly 3,500 government hospitals and health centres. This shift to clean energy has slashed electricity bills by up to 80%, especially benefiting rural facilities struggling with unreliable power. Over 1,000 sub-centres, 107 taluk hospitals, and 50 PHCs now partially run on solar power, with estimated savings of ₹100 crore over 10 years and a reduction of nearly 2 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said Karnataka contributes 18–20% of India’s solar-powered healthcare facilities, aiming to solarise 5,000 centres by next year. North Karnataka districts, including Raichur and Belagavi, have seen maximum installations. The scheme also features the Soura e-Mitra app for maintenance and real-time monitoring, handled under SELCO Foundation and NHM’s CSR partnership, ensuring reliable, sustainable healthcare for remote communities.
