FASTag, AI-Powered Monitoring and Barrier-Free Tolling Transform India’s Highway Travel India’s national highways are witnessing a major digital transformation, with average toll plaza crossing time falling from 734 seconds in 2014 to just 40 seconds on FASTag lanes, according to the 2024–25 National Electronic Toll Collection Impact Assessment. RFID-based FASTag has streamlined toll payments, reduced queues and improved traffic movement. FASTag transactions increased from 416.38 crore in FY25 to 478.17 crore in FY26, while collections rose to ₹82,342 crore. The government is also expanding the ₹3,000 annual FASTag pass and promoting the Rajmargyatra app to improve commuter convenience. Meanwhile, Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling is emerging as the next major development. Using automatic number plate recognition, RFID readers and LiDAR, the technology enables vehicles to pass without stopping at conventional barriers. Advanced Traffic Management Systems and upgrades to the 1033 highway helpline are further strengthening traffic enforcement, emergency response and road safety across India’s expanding highway network.
