UN watchdog urges halt to attacks amid fears of radiological disaster.
IAEA Warns Strikes Near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant Pose Serious Safety Risk.
The head of the UN nuclear watchdog has issued a strong warning over repeated strikes near Iran’s only operational nuclear power facility. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi said attacks close to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant pose a “very real danger” to nuclear safety and must stop immediately. Located in southern Iran, the Bushehr plant houses a 1,000-megawatt reactor and has reportedly been targeted four times since the outbreak of the US–Israeli conflict with Iran. The latest strike, reported by Iranian state media, landed just 75 metres from the plant’s perimeter. While satellite imagery analysis confirmed no direct damage to the reactor, Grossi warned that any strike near an operating nuclear facility could trigger a severe radiological accident with cross-border consequences. Built with Russian assistance, Bushehr is Iran’s only active nuclear reactor. Following the latest incident, nearly 200 workers were temporarily evacuated, highlighting growing safety concerns around the site.
