India's Offshore Wind Era Begins: Gujarat Gets ₹6,900 Cr Transmission Boost for 500 MW Project

India's offshore wind journey is finally underway, with the Centre approving ₹6,900 crore for transmission infrastructure to evacuate 500 MW from Gujarat’s maiden offshore wind project. Developed by Powergrid under a regulated tariff model, the system will be ready by March 2029. It includes a 190-km 400kV transmission line from Mahuva to Vataman, a 35-km subsea cable, and a 10-km underground link connecting offshore turbines to Gujarat’s grid. This milestone marks a crucial step toward India’s 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity, with Gujarat targeting 100 GW alone. As of June 2025, the state has reached 35 GW. Offshore wind, seen as a more consistent energy source, could solve intermittency issues faced by onshore renewables. GUVNL plans to invest ₹1 lakh crore in strengthening transmission infrastructure, complementing central efforts to enhance REZ connectivity, making Gujarat a frontrunner in India’s green energy transformation.
