Delhi Notifies New Slum Rehabilitation Policy to House 5 Lakh Families.

The policy promises permanent 1-BHK homes, improved civic amenities and priority for in-situ rehabilitation to improve living conditions for nearly 20 lakh people.   The Delhi government has notified the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Relocation and Rehabilitation Policy, 2026, which aims to provide permanent housing to nearly five lakh families, covering around 20 lakh people. The policy applies to eligible settlements established before January 1, 2025, under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan’ initiative. Beneficiaries will receive 1-BHK homes equipped with essential amenities, including access to schools, anganwadi centres, healthcare facilities and playgrounds. The government will prioritise in-situ rehabilitation or relocation within a three-kilometre radius of existing settlements. Separate housing units will be considered for independent families occupying different floors, while persons with disabilities will receive priority for ground-floor accommodation. Common infrastructure maintenance and security will be provided for five years. Allotments will be made through computerised draws, supported by GIS-based monitoring and grievance redressal mechanisms. Under PPP projects, developers must arrange temporary accommodation or rental assistance during redevelopment.
