Idukki Hydel Project Saved Kerala from Darkness: Power Minister.
Kerala Power Minister K. Krishnankutty on Thursday described the Idukki Hydroelectric Project as a realised dream that rescued the state from darkness. He was inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the project and releasing its commemorative souvenir at the Moolamattom IHEP school ground. Calling it one of the most remarkable achievements in Kerala’s history, the minister said the project was made possible through the dedication and sacrifice of officials and workers. He stressed that the contribution of Kolumban Mooppan, who laid the foundation for the project, must be remembered and taught to future generations. Krishnankutty noted that Kerala has added 2,394 MW of power capacity in the last decade and is targeting 10,000 MW through multiple initiatives. He said the government is focusing on solar power expansion and strengthening backup systems using renewable energy. Commissioned in 1976, the Idukki project includes three dams, among them the iconic Idukki Arch Dam, with its powerhouse at Moolamattom.
