India on track to add over 60 GW renewable capacity in 2026: ReNew’s Sumant Sinha.

Rooftop solar and solar pumps could contribute nearly 15 GW as India accelerates its clean-energy expansion.

India is on track to add more than 60 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2026, according to ReNew founder, chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha, who spoke at a high-level United Nations General Assembly session during New York Climate Week. Sinha said India added around 44 GW of renewable capacity in 2025 and is expected to significantly exceed that figure this year. Nearly 15 GW of the anticipated 2026 additions could come from distributed renewable sources, including rooftop solar and solar pumps. He also noted that India achieved its target of having 50% of its energy mix from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, ahead of the 2030 goal. India now has around 300 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, with the next phase requiring greater investment in transmission, grid management, energy storage and electrification. Sinha said the private sector has mobilised nearly $300 billion toward India’s renewable-energy ecosystem over the past 10–15 years.
