Trade Under Pressure: Logistics Sector Seeks Urgent Support Amid Global Turmoil .
West Asia Conflict Disrupts India’s Container Rail Logistics, Operators Seek Railways’ Relief.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has begun to severely impact India’s container rail logistics sector, with operators facing rising costs due to stalled cargo movement and empty wagon runs. According to the Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO), over 50 container trains were stabled in March alone, a sharp jump from the usual 4–5 rakes. The empty wagon movement has surged to 15–20%, compared to the normal average of under 5%. ACTO President Manish Puri said export-import volumes declined by nearly 40%, while domestic cargo in sectors like tiles and steel fell by around 10%. To manage the crisis, operators have sought temporary relief from Indian Railways, including waivers on stabling charges, empty haulage costs, and container ground rent. While bodies like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority have announced fee waivers, ACTO stressed that similar support from railways is crucial to prevent cost escalation for cargo owners and protect national trade.
