Harnessing Rivers, Empowering the North East — India’s Green Frontier Gets a Boost.

MNRE to Launch New Small Hydro Policy to Power North East’s Renewable Energy Growth.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will soon introduce a Small Hydro Policy to accelerate clean energy expansion across the North Eastern region, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced at the Regional Workshop on Renewable Energy in Guwahati. The policy aims to tap the region’s hilly and riverine potential for small hydro projects, promoting sustainable energy generation and rural development. Joshi highlighted the North East’s 122 GW renewable potential, of which only 5.1 GW is currently installed, urging states to fast-track schemes like PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM. He praised Assam’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy and reaffirmed MNRE’s commitment to provide both policy and financial support. The workshop, attended by ministers from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura, also discussed green hydrogen, decentralised renewables, and innovative financing, underscoring the region’s pivotal role in India’s renewable energy transition.
