India’s first demonstration-scale geothermal project advances clean, round-the-clock energy for Ladakh.
ONGC Completes Two Deep Geothermal Wells at Ladakh’s Puga Project.
ONGC has completed two deep geothermal wells (GT#02 and GT#03) at the Puga Geothermal Project in Ladakh, marking a major milestone in developing India’s first demonstration-scale geothermal power project. The achievement was commemorated by the unveiling of a plaque by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh at the project site. The initiative aims to provide reliable, clean, and 24x7 electricity to remote regions of Ladakh, reducing dependence on conventional fuels and improving power availability during harsh winters. Beyond electricity generation, the geothermal project is expected to support space heating, greenhouse farming, year-round agriculture, food processing, geotourism, and sustainable livelihoods, helping Ladakh move toward its carbon-neutral vision. Implemented jointly by the ONGC Energy Centre, the UT Administration of Ladakh, and LAHDC-Leh, the project also strengthens India's clean energy portfolio, enhances energy security, promotes technological innovation, and supports the country's long-term Net Zero goals.
