Powering India’s steel industry toward net zero with innovation, independence, and sustainability.

Green Hydrogen: The Catalyst for India’s Low-Carbon Steel Revolution.

Green hydrogen is emerging as a game-changer for India’s steel sector, enabling the direct reduction of iron (DRI) without coking coal and eliminating most process emissions. With the steel industry contributing around 12% of India’s CO₂ emissions, integrating green hydrogen offers a critical path toward the nation’s 2070 net-zero goal. Pilot projects are already underway as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 MMT annual production by 2030. The India Green Steel Coalition projects that hydrogen-based steelmaking could account for 41% of India’s output by 2070. Beyond emission cuts, this transition will reduce dependence on imported coal, enhance energy security, and position India as a potential exporter of green steel. Complementary technologies like electrolysis-based iron extraction and electric arc furnaces further strengthen decarbonisation efforts. Collaboration across industry, finance, and policy is key to shaping a sustainable and self-reliant industrial future for India.
